Mt. McKinley is only visible 80% of the year. It was a no show for us this visit. The train ride was long and scenic. Arctic tundra of surface melting permafrost and earthquake trees comprised the landscape all along the tracks. In 1964 there was a huge earthquake that affected all of the South central and Interior of Alaska. It shook for 10 to 15 minutes at a 9 point something. The glacial silt actually liquefied the ground and the trees sunk - some to four feet. The salt water seeped in and preserved and killed the roots of the trees. They are called earthquake trees and are everywhere.Wildlife sightings were plentiful.
We were unable to take any clear photos from inside the viewing windows of the moving train. There was an outside area to stand on the train car but I failed to get anything really worthy of posting. Not my day for pictures I guess.
The small town of Denali is only open for the summer tourist season from May 15 to September 15 after that the whole town closes up and everyone migrates to warmer climates. The weather was in the low 70's and the mood was upbeat and energetic. If you are planning a trip give yourself more than two days. There is much to do and see.
The Visitors Center at one end of the park is very well done. It has an interpretive center that is equal to a small nature museum with ongoing movies and exhibits. A book store, gift shop and a restaurant are all within walking distance to the train station. Available tours included Jeep rides, 8 hour bus tours, helicopter and plane rides, river rafting, bike rentals and mushing dog performances were given. Hiking is a given as there are trails all over. We could not face an 8 hour bus ride (on a dirt road) after an 8 hour train ride only to return on another 8 hour train ride. If we had had another day we would have done it as it was well reviewed by those who took the ride. Lots of bear, moose, Dall sheep and eagle sightings. No Northern Light appearances as the sun never seems to set. Food was delicious. I had fresh halibut fish tacos that were worth making the trip all over again for. This picture was one view from the hotel.
John says I can come back in October of 2036. Not sure how he came up with that date but I'll take it if I am still around.
