Anchorage's Botanical Gardens

With visions of flowering beds and pathways, I made an effort to find Anchorage's Botanical Gardens. It is near the University and the Campbell Airstrip in a busy section of the city. The gardens are dotted with foxholes (now just large mounds of dirt) and the paths are reported to have been made by tanks used for training purposes in World War II. A dead tree is identified by a nice marker. Guess the bark beetles dirty work gets equal billing with the live trees. I was disappointed in what I found. Maybe late May is just too early for blooming plants in this part of Alaska. There were markers all along the trails identifying what looked like sick weeds. The wild flower trail . . . wasn't.

This picture was the best of it. Oh and the warning signs for bear and moose were pretty cool. I whistled my way around the paths to alert any wildlife I was coming through. Must have been effective because I saw none. Save your $5.00 or maybe try it in July.
