Boat names. Never gave them much thought. Always assumed boats were named after the wife, mistress, daughter or favorite female dog of the owner. Not so. When Jan told me the name of the commercial crabbing boat they bought - The Leonard G. my initial reaction was "what an awful name". Later finding out it was named after the man's son who had died in the war I felt bad about my reaction.
Funny how many boats are named for women - considering women (and bananas) are rumored to be bad luck on a boat.
Curious now as to what inspired some of the names on the boats I see such as Polaris, Innis Free, Free Spirit, New Hope, Wandering Star, Inspiration, and Super Star. Many names are self explanatory such as Another Bad Hair Day, Fishing Impossible and Murphy's Lure (found those on the Internet). Still many are named for the love of ones life - Miss Sarah, Jenny Lynn, Leta J. and Sea Witch.
The Charter Boat named - Bottom Line. I know that was named by accountants but try explaining that to the customers who raise their eyebrows at the name as if it were predicting the outcome of their fishing adventure.
Gratitude for people's cleverness and humor. Also for those who honored loved ones with names that give us pause and provoke thought and insight.

Hey Pat, there is one up here, the dingy is named "original design" and the boat itself is named "change order" . . . you may have to be in project management to get it, but that speaks to how those names come about as well!
